My Perspective: Dating With SMA

I was diagnosed with SMA type 1 when I was 6 months old. The doctors told my parents that I wasn't supposed to live to see my first birthday. Now I'm 25 years old and living my life to the fullest! I have a trache and G-tube. I'm on a ventilator. I have a communication device called a Dynavox that I use to communicate with.

I'm very outgoing and social. I like going fishing, hunting, lounging in the pool and on the beach, shopping, hanging out with my family and friends, and being on Facebook and Twitter.

What’s it like dating with SMA?

Let’s just say this: It’s super difficult and stressful because it’s really hard finding a good guy who can love me for me and take care of me. I’ve never been in a relationship before, and I just really want a boyfriend to share my first kiss with.

What are you looking for in a boyfriend?

I’m a sweet, kind, and loving person who deserves someone who shows her the same amount of love and respect. Ever since I was a child, I’ve always dreamed of having a boyfriend who can love me and share a life with me.

I don’t want to rely on my parents caring for me. They’re getting older, and they deserve to live a life without stressing and worrying about me and my medical necessities.

The main traits I'm looking for in a boyfriend are loyalty, respect, kindness, and a sense of humor. My relationship goals are to be like Shane Burcaw and Hannah Aylward [YouTube vloggers Squirmy and Grubs].

What do you like about Shane and Hannah’s relationship?

They’re supportive and loving with each other. I mean, they’re so adorable and funny together. I would love to document my relationship on YouTube like they do.

How do you go about finding people to date?

I’m on the dating site Match right now. I tried Bumble, but unfortunately the site was inaccessible for my Dynavox. I also like getting to know people face to face.

What person in your life do you trust to set you up with the right guy?

I would trust my mom or my two best girlfriends, Ashley and Skylar.

What’s your ideal date?

A Disney movie day or game night!

My Perspective articles discuss SMA from a specific point of view. We understand that everyone with SMA or caring for someone with the condition has a different experience. We aim to share as many of those viewpoints as we can. We’d love to hear from you. Please submit your proposal for editorial consideration to editors@myhealthteams.com.
