Have people with SMA type 4 tried current drugs, and what were the results?
Spinraza (nusinersen) is FDA-approved for SMA in both children and adults, including all types of SMA. It's given by injection into the spinal fluid and works by increasing SMN protein production. Studies show it improves motor function across all SMA types, including later-onset forms.
However, Spinraza hasn't been studied specifically in people with SMA type 4 yet. This means while it's available and has shown benefits for other SMA types, there's limited research data specifically for type 4.
Several other drugs are currently being studied in clinical trials for adults with SMA, including:
* Valproic acid
* Risdiplam
* Pyridostigmine
* Reldesemtiv
* Olesoxime
Some mySMAteam members have shared mixed experiences with SMA treatments. One mentioned that their treatment caused too much nerve and muscle pain, while another needed to rest the entire day after receiving treatment. Others haven't seen significant improvements.
