Lifting Weights - Causing Or Limiting Atrophy?
A mySMAteam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all. The advice is so conflicting on the topic of lifting weights. I'm a strong type 3. I can still feel good muscle in my arms and it exists (albeit not great) in my legs. Is lifting weights ok or are we to limit our exercise to lifting our own body weight only? I am on Evrysdi.

You can exercise. But don't overdo it. As I stated above. Aqua therapy is the best! Best of luck to you!!

I have heard two completely opposite rational on SMA and exercise, and I suspect the answer is somewhere in the middle. On one hand, many say exercise is very beneficial with maintaining muscle strength, flexibility etc. On the other hand, many individual's with SMA may already be expending their maximal muscle energy just doing routine task...some say there is burn out from over use of already taxed muscles. I am really not sure which is true and it may depend on the individual. If by the end of the day, you feel like your muscles have given all they have to give, exercise might only make you wear out sooner. If you feel you are not maximixing your muscle strength, exercise may improve your quality of life and health.

Yes, working out is good for you. Lite weight. If you have access to a pool. That's the best workout anyone can do. I work out 3 to 4 days a week. I use resistant bands too. Along with lite dumbbells. You can buy them on Amazon. I wish you the best!!

EricOvelgone, I feel the best for everyone is to ask their doctor who is treating their SMA about working out. This way you and others have no confusion. Just my opinion...
