Things have been going terribly for me lately, and need advice. In the midst of constantly looking for attendant care for myself, my 88 year old father who had been recovering from a broken hip has suddenly and drastically begun to mentally decline. i have two older sister's, one who is paralyzed from neck down and is living with her partner fighting their own attendant care battles appearing even in the news. The other sister, the only abled bodied member of our immediate family, moved back… read more
Thank You so much. Unfortunately i am in Finksburg, not Fredrick, in Carroll County Maryland. Already contacted local health department and department of aging, and because of income, dad doesnt qualify for any services and things like transportation are very limited. Sister controls the access to any savings, so without her agreeing more help is needed which is super expensive, my hands are tied.
Eric, I’m sorry you’re carrying so much. Managing my own caregivers is one of the hardest parts of living with SMA. Having your dad’s care and the household falling on you as well sounds exhausting.
I looked up some resources specifically for Frederick. You may already know these programs, but I wanted to give you an actual local contact:
**Frederick County Maryland Access Point: (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators)**
They assist both adults with disabilities and older people, so you can explain that there are **two people in the home needing separate care support**.
For your own care, ask about **Community First Choice** and **Community Personal Assistance Services**, including options for choosing your attendants. These are Medicaid programs with eligibility requirements. If you already receive services, ask your supports planner to review the gaps in your coverage and help establish a backup plan.
For your dad, ask about Frederick County’s **Senior Care and Personal Care programs**, plus meals and transportation to medical appointments. The county describes in-home assessment and case management through Senior Care, and help with bathing, dressing, and meal preparation through Personal Care. Eligibility and availability would need to be checked.
You could start the call with:
“I have SMA and insufficient attendant coverage. My 88-year-old father also needs care after a broken hip and mental decline. I’m struggling to meet both our needs. Can someone help coordinate assessments and services for each of us?”
