I have always relied on my father's help to provide some of my care, but now I find myself in the awkward position where he is needing more and more care himself that I can not provide. I barely have enough attendant care for my own basic needs and he doesn't qualify for help himself. Anyone else managing under those circumstances? Tips?

This is certainly a challenging situation that requires careful consideration of both your needs and your father's needs. Managing SMA while trying to care for a parent can be physically and emotionally demanding. The key is to ensure you're maintaining your own health while seeking additional support options.

Here are some suggestions to help manage this situation:

• Request an evaluation of your current home care assistance to see if additional hours can be approved based on changed circumstances
• Look into nonprofit organizations that may provide supplemental support services
• Consider consulting with a social worker who can help identify programs or resources you might not be aware of
• Explore whether combining care services could be more efficient - some home care providers may be able to assist both you and your father during the same visit Remember that your mental health is essential during this transition. The stress of being both a care recipient and trying to support a parent can be overwhelming. Consider speaking with a mental health professional who can help you navigate these changing family dynamics and develop coping strategies.

Many mySMAteam members have shared that while these situations are complex, solutions often emerge through creative problem-solving and reaching out to multiple support channels.
